We took a few moments to gather at and got on the bus to Saint Lukes's Hospital. The whole journey took about half an hour, and when we reached our destination, we were briefed about what to do. After a quick practice session, we went into action.

Coincidentally, the lift went beeping when we stepped in, and even though no one remained in the lift, it still went beeping for a while.

There were four levels and a large number of wards to cover. Some of the boys and girls performed for the patients, some talked with them, while the rest were engaged in adminstrative work. We had not expected such a large number of patients, and due to the limited number of songs, we were forced to repeat the same old performance ward after ward, and Sean sang "Love Me Tender" so many times, I swore afterwards I would never have any close encounter with it ever again.

We finished the whole activity in an hour or so, some of the patients were seemingly satistfied, the hospital's staff were pleased from what we heard, and with that, we left the hospital.

Hello people from 4F! I, Fairuz Atiqah, am your star blogger for today, 15 March 2007, Thursday. Basically, I am going to fill you in about what my group did for Service Learning earlier on in the day. My group members are Ammar (group leader), Xiong Jie, Zi Yang, Jun Xian, Hannah, Natasha, Muneera, Josephine and Michelle.

When my group reached St Luke’s Hospital, we were brought to a conference room by a volunteer in the hospital who later introduced herself as Rong Yi (I hope I got her name right!). While waiting for further instructions from her, my group actually took pictures in the small compact room (thanks Ammar for being our photographer for the day!).

After ten minutes or so, Rong Yi took us for a tour around the hospital. Honestly, I cannot remember how many wards we went to! However, I can still remember that we interacted with the elderly and sickly in the hospital. We waved to them and said hello to them. The boys in my group even started a conversation with an old lady!

Once the tour ended, Rong Yi divided my group into two smaller groups. The four boys in my group were led to a storeroom while the rest of us girls went back to the conference room. Actually, my group had to do administrative work during the three hours we were in St Luke’s Hospital.

What was the girls’ task? We were supposed to pack brochures and pamphlets as well as the most recent St Luke’s Hospital newsletter into envelopes. According to Rong Yi, these envelopes will be posted and sent to people who are interested to know more about the many services provided in St Luke’s Hospital.

What were the boys supposed to do? Their task was the complete opposite of the girl’s task! The boys had to rip paper from the piles of files in the storeroom and put the paper in cardboard boxes, which I guess will be sent for recycling later.

GIRLS VS BOYS

PACKING PAPER NICELY

VS

TEARING AND CRUMPLING PAPER

When I stepped into the storeroom to check on the boys, I felt as if I had just entered a war zone. Paper and files were strewn on the floor. Everything was in a disorganised and untidy state in the storeroom. You know what? I actually caught Ammar and Zi Yang jumping on top the mountain of paper in the cardboard boxes!

However, on the girls’ side, it was very calm and peaceful. The six of us were so engrossed in packing the many information booklets neatly into the envelopes that we did not even feel the time passing by. Said Natasha, “I feel as if I am a human machine!”

Once the boys had completed their task in the storeroom, they joined us girls and helped us out. They really speeded things up. We had to constantly ask Rong Yi to print and photocopy more pamphlets and brochures as we were running out of them.

2000 envelopes. That was in fact the approximate number of envelopes my group of 10 people packed for St Luke’s Hospital. I bet many of you are in disbelief as to the amount of envelopes we packed as it seems too large a number. Well, all I can say is this. Once my group members and I put out heart and soul into doing what we were instructed to do by Rong Yi, be it packing envelopes or ripping paper from files, anything is possible for us to accomplish. What matters most to us is that we are helping out at St Luke’s Hospital. That is our little way of contributing back to the society.

One word to sum up our day at St Luke’s Hospital: FUN! Thanks to the jokers in my group like Ammar, Xiong Jie and Zi Yang for constantly cracking the rest of us up while we were packing the envelopes. To all my group members, good job guys! We did well!

DAY 1:

Today we went to the St Luke's hospital to volunteer. Once we reached there, we were lost, the place was new to us and we do not know where to report to. We went in to the reception to ask for directions. After which we were safely in the hands of the volunteers there. In the office, we met Rung and Pricilla. Pricilla gave us the permission to raid the drinks and food in the refrigerator.

We were given a tour of the place by Rung who was happy to answer any of our doubts. The best spot was the place where some of the patients there planted plants like chilli and tomato. The herbs there had a claming and soothing effect on us. Throughout tour we saw many of the wards there. There are different types of ward, like the 6 bed and 4 bed wards.

The highlight of the day was the lift!! When we got into the lift for the first time, there were 13 of us together including Rung, but the lift beeped and showed the sign OVERLOADED! We were shocked. One by one we started going out of the lift, it ended up with only 6 people left in the lift. The maximum weight limit of the lift was 1600kg, it was supposed to be able to take 16 people at a time. We all could only stare in amazement at how heavy we were!!

After the tour, we started helping out in the admin work. Our job scope included packing the files that contains brochures to sorting them out. We also help to cut the brochure. Our efficiency level was so high that we complete everything we could do at 12pm. I would be glad to go back to there to volunteer.

hello AMMAR here! our blog looks so dead with the latest entry on the 19august!! so im being generous here by sacrificing my time which should be used in doing homework to write this entry. So you better give me credit for this! hoho. so its just been stressful for all of us lately. with a mountain of math homework! actually two mountains! hoho. not to mention the non stop tests! can you imagine having 7 tests in five days! this is too much! but people, if you were to study hard till the late night/morning like me, not only will you gain panda eyes, but you would acheive great results! so be a panda today! all you have to do is stay up until 4am everyday to revise! JUST KiDDING!!! eventhough i do that, i do not want you to because lack of sleep is bad people!! very bad! haha. well maybe we/I should post the homeworks and test we have everyday! so when a teacher happens to pass by, they would be able to see that we have too much homework and tests to study for that they wil complain to the school and we will have a month free from homeworks! THAT WILL BE THE DAY!! ya as mdm mah would say, quote, "you all are triple science class, you should do alot, infact, you should do more!" by the way, we are not triple science class, we are FROM a triple science class! teachers nowadays have poor english/grammar! seriously! and they still have the cheek to say that we students are poor in our volcabulary! obviously not english teachers but those teaching other subjects! sometimes they use the letter s at the end of every word and im confused if they are actually trying to say that it is supposed to be alot or just one! okay so cut the crap! i better be going off now! math homework is awaiting me! cries! to top it off, the list of homeworks and tests!

homeworks
9 amath questions (as always)
english speech (most of us are clueless on how it should be done!)
malay homework (for the higher malay students)
biology practical workbook

tests
math trigo test on monday (i think?)
math common test on wednesday
well cant say now actually since the teachers would definately add more tests next week!

so on a last note, good luck!
